LARRP: Proposition 47
Proposition 47
In November 2014, California’s electorate voted by 60% to pass the Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act, otherwise known as Proposition 47, which reduced 6 non-violent, non-serious felonies and/or wobblers to misdemeanors – minor drug possession and 5 petty offenses under $950.
The intent of Proposition 47 is to ensure that prison spending is focused on violent and serious offenses, maximize alternatives for non-serious, nonviolent crime, and invest the savings generated into prevention and support programs in K-12 schools, victim services, and mental health and drug treatment, which all reduce recidivism for people in the criminal justice system.
