Grounding Us in Our Space – Andrew Gonzales

"Everything was just starting to hit me, like all the pain, fear, and hurt that I imposed on people's lives was hitting me. I felt like every single person that I ever hurt in my life was right there in front of me, facing me."

The meeting began as all of our meetings do with an impactful speaker to ground us in the space and inspire us anew to do the work we do.

Andrew Gonzales shared his incredible journey from a troubled past to becoming a beacon of hope and change in his community. His story is one of profound transformation, rooted in the harsh realities of a violent upbringing and a life marked by gang involvement and incarceration.

Andrew began by reflecting on his childhood in South Central Los Angeles, where his home environment was overwhelmed by gang violence and neglect. "Growing up, I felt like I didn’t matter," he recounted. "I took those same beliefs with me everywhere, and it reflected in my attitude and behavior." These early experiences set Andrew on a path that eventually led to a 40-year-to-life sentence for attempted murder at the young age of 18.

However, Andrew’s time in prison was not the end of his story. He shared a pivotal moment when he attended a victim awareness class facilitated by the organization he now works for, Healing, Dialogue and Action. This class forced Andrew to confront the pain he had caused others, sparking a deep desire for change.

This moment was the catalyst for Andrew's transformation. He committed himself to personal growth, earned a degree in Business, and dedicated his life to giving back to the community. Upon his release in 2023, Andrew joined Healing, Dialog and Action as a credible messenger, working tirelessly to mentor at-risk youth and support crime survivors. He is also pursuing barbering and culinary training for his own nonprofit, using these skills to engage and inspire others with similar stories.

Andrew's message was clear and powerful: change is possible, and it begins with confronting one’s past and taking responsibility. He reminded us that "everything that you got in your heart that's tugging on you, that you're suppressing… it only survives in the dark, so you gotta talk about it and bring it to the light." His words left a lasting impact on all attendees, underscoring the importance of resilience, accountability, and the transformative power of support and mentorship.
