Celebrating LARRP’s 100th General Meeting!

Can you believe we've hit the 100th General Meeting milestone? It feels like just yesterday when we started these gatherings…13 years ago, in an effort to convene and organize the reentry community to better serve our loved ones coming home. Every month, since August 2011, whether in person or online, an average of 100 reentry advocates and professionals gather on the 3rd Thursday, sharing critical reentry sector updates, hearing from state and local leaders, and networking amongst each other. LARRP General Meetings have grown into a cornerstone of our community, even earning mentions in the LA Times and other major media outlets.

We begin each General Meeting with moving personal testimony by a formerly incarcerated individual. These stories ground us in our purpose and remind us why we do what we do. They are a powerful testament to the resilience and strength within our community. For example, at our June meeting, our very own Program Coordinator, Betty Mills, shared her inspiring journey from battling substance abuse and incarceration to pursuing a PhD and leading the LEADERS Training Academy. Stories like Betty’s showcase the incredible transformations happening within our community.

LARRP General Meetings always feature guest speakers, elected officials and other experts in relevant fields, who share valuable insights and key information on justice related laws, bills, programs, resources, and opportunities. In the June meeting, we learned about LAHSA’s new Problem-Solving Strategies approach to housing instability, the Partners For Justice program that assigns client advocates to overstaffed Public Defenders, and the new Amity Foundation SSI 50+ Grant opportunity.

Our Executive Director and Co-Founder, Troy Vaughn, also provides updates from his extensive network, facilitating discussions on how we can better connect resources and agencies to maximize our impact. He opens the floor to our 100+ attendees, who often represent organizations, agencies, and programs, for an organic conversation.

We have come to see that these meetings are essential for our community. They provide the only space where a countywide network of reentry-focused non-profits, public agencies, and advocates come together. This unique gathering advances our mission to ensure that our reentry system effectively meets the needs of our agencies, communities, and the individuals we serve. There is no other place to get such comprehensive and crucial information about policy and programmatic developments in the reentry sector.

The true beauty of our General Meetings lies in you—the participants. The more voices we hear and the more knowledge we share, the stronger and more impactful our gatherings become. LARRP takes pride in being the connector, but it’s the attendees and speakers who make these meetings truly invaluable.

We deeply appreciate every single one of you who has attended, shared, and contributed over the years. Your dedication and passion are what make our community so special. As we celebrate this milestone, we encourage even more of you to join us. Your presence and participation will help us continue to drive meaningful change in the reentry sector.

Thank you for being a part of this incredible journey. Together, we are making a difference. Here's to the next 100 meetings!
